La Minita Coffee - It's in the Green Beans

La Minita; Spanish for "The Little Gold Mine" says it all. La Minita is arguably the best coffee in the world and is sipped by the who's who in the specialty coffee industry as well as by those of us who have access to it in our businesses. Similar to the wine industry, the best coffees are not always the most expensive. There are many factors involved in determining the final price of a coffee, unfortunately the quality of the bean is only one of them.

La Minita comes from the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica in Central America. This region has long been known for it's quality coffee and remains one of the finest growing regions in the world. The La Minita Estate is located at the pinnacle of this region on a spur between two rivers 5700 feet above sea level. The farm actually has several "Micro Climates" within the farm which effect the crop in different ways. The meticulous way in which coffee is grown, pruned, fertilized, shaded, and weeded all add to the final product. Long before "Organic" was popular, this farm was using machetes to cut back weeds rather than chemicals. Long before "fair trade" was popular this farm was treating it's employees with respect, providing dental and medical resources right on the farm, paying above local scale, providing household items at below cost prices, and encouraged a coffee workers association to promote fair, safe and equitable conditions.

When the "new crop" is in, samples are taken from each of the micro growing regions on the farm and cupped to determine the years mix. The pickers start at daybreak and finish picking about noon. The days harvest is measured from each picker then at a central pick up point and again at the mill. Every La Minita coffee bean arrives at the mill the same day it is picked which is essential in producing the world's best coffee. The milling process is more meticulous than other mills and the beans are watched at each stage of the preparation. When they have reached the point where most beans would be bagged up and exported, LaMinita enters its final stage. Every bean is looked at by trained coffee sorters who go over and over the beans removing any bean that may taint the final cup.

Unlike the other "exotic" coffees of the world, La Minita is in this category for one reason: QUALITY! I once spent a few days with a farmer from Jamaica who wanted to increase his crop. When he was told how to make his coffee better, he replied: "I can sell every bean I can grow for $17.00 a pound; all I want to do is get more production". Unfortunately this is often the case in the exotics. Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona and other exotics demand high prices but way too often do not deliver the cup. LaMinita sells for far less than Jamaican and Kona and is always a superb coffee at a reasonable price. Visit the La Minita web site at: www.laminita.com .

Gourmet Coffee - Enjoy Your Coffee Break

Why not jazz up your morning ritual with cup of rich gourmet coffee. Then it's time to reward yourself with something different. Are you tired of your regular Joe cup of coffee that you start your day with?

That gourmet meal is probably going to stay at the restaurant unless you invite a chef over but gourmet coffee can be made in the comfort of your own home with just a little practice. The dictionary defines gourmet food like this, "Gourmet food is that which is of the highest quality, perfectly prepared and artfully presented." If you want the highest quality coffee, you can do that at home yourself.

Stick with the supermarket coffee for when you're rushing off to work. Make it an end of the week tradition. Unless money is no object, why not save the gourmet cup of coffee for the weekends. Gourmet coffee is more expensive than say, supermarket brands but the taste is also much richer.

Some of the most popular gourmet beans include Kona, Jamaican Blue Mountain, and Sumatra types. Gourmet Coffee beans can be bought by the pound and there are many varieties to choose from. To make your own gourmet coffee start with the beans.

In the world of wine you have the popular Sonoma wines which come from Kona, Hawaii. In the world of coffee the equivalent would be Kona beans which come from Sonoma Valley in California. Coffee beans are similar to wine in that they name the beans after the region.

Kona coffee beans are grown in rich volcanic soil and the mild tropical climate of the Kona coffee belt on the western side of the Big Island of Hawaii. It has a wonderfully full, rich and smooth flavor with little or no bitter after taste. Be sure that you buy Kona beans and not a Kona blend. A Kona blend can legally be labeled as Kona with as little as 10% of actual Kona beans in it.

Next you'll need to grind your beans. Ground coffee begins losing it's flavor once it's exposed to air. So you'll want to grind just enough to make your desired amount. Store any leftover grinds in an air tight container. You'll want to grind you coffee beans very fine but don't pulverize them into dust. If you over grind them the heat and friction will vaporize the oils that give the coffee it's distinct flavor.

When was the last time you cleaned your coffee maker? A clean coffee maker makes a significant difference in how your coffee tastes. At least once a month pour a mixture of half vinegar and half water into your coffee maker. Let the mix run through the full brew process. Repeat the process again using only water this time to rinse it out. Do this one more time if a vinegar smell is still present.

Now you're work is done and it's time for the coffee maker to pulls it's weight. Use clean filtered water and fill the coffee maker to the desired level. Use about 6 ounces of water for every 2 heaping tablespoons of coffee. Turn it on and hang around while it brews. You'll want to be there to enjoy the delightful aroma.

Gourmet coffees can really jazz up your day. And what better way to start a special than that with a special cup of coffee. But every once in a while you should treat yourself to something special. Everyday coffee is perfect for everyday life.

Round Coffee Tables

Used correctly, they can balance the elements of your living room and add some extra character to dark corners. Round coffee tables add very interesting dimensions to a space filled with furniture. Nothing beats the elegance of a round coffee table - the right size, material and make can transform an otherwise unsophisticated living space into something classy and inviting.

They are also very easily stained - paint it a different hue each season and give your space an entirely new look year after year. Cedar wood strikes an unusual balance of a smooth finish that is highly resistant to the elements, making it the ideal coffee table for both indoor and outdoor use. Round coffee tables made of cedar are quickly gaining popularity, mostly because of their practicality and flexibility.

Select a round coffee table with minimalist details if you want other fixtures in your room to stand out, and do the reverse to achieve an opposite effect - choose an intricate and imposing coffee table to downplay the rest of your furniture. The key is to find the right coffee table size and design for your specific purpose. Round coffee tables are great as either centerpieces or corner accents.

Some people build their whole living room around a particular round coffee table style, especially if the table is exquisitely crafted, very unique or holds some sentimental value (such as high-quality coffee tables are passed on from generation to generation). It is also a god idea to buy matching stools, soft tables and lamps to complement your coffee table, if your space allows it.

Use your instincts and you will never go wrong. Don't be afraid to mix and match. To add more character to your coffee table, why not decorate it with colorfully covered books to add instant character to a neural room.

Employee Satisfaction - Bring on the Coffee Machine!

In today's business world, with its connectivity and information flows, good employees are likely to be the targets of your competitors' recruitment drives.

Add to this the fact that in the knowledge economy, these employees provide your company with a competitive advantage, and you realise pretty quickly that you need them to be happy - but you already knew that didn't you?

Keeping them happy with more money, promotions, bigger offices, better located offices…(the list is seemingly endless) certainly helps, but then if your staff are good at what they do, you're in a bidding war with the company down the street who also recognises this. Employees who are unhappy or who leave, present the company with a cost that is often far greater than imagined. The question then is how to keep them happy?

Over the past few years the National Automated Merchandising Association, which represents vending stakeholders, has identified an increase in demand for higher quality coffee machines - coffee machines that use real coffee beans and provide a cup of really fresh coffee on demand. Take coffee for example. Smart companies have other ways of making staff smile.

Worse still, the last one to use it often has the task of preparing the next pot…so human nature takes over and that last cup sits brewing until it turns into sludge! The problem is that it then sits on the boil and after 10 minutes no-one wants to venture near it, fearing that bitter and burnt taste. Disappearing fast are the days of the pour-over coffee flask…you know the one…when freshly brewed, that little glass jar is the envy of all, and there is no shortage of people around the "lifesaver".

Enter the automatic coffee machine …great concept with beverages available at the push of a button, but the problem until recently was that it produced instant coffee and not very good at that. In desperation, usually early in the morning or during the night shift, the buttons did eventually get pressed, but grudgingly at that!

The good news for those who like decent coffee is that the coffee machine manufacturers have made great progress with automated fresh brew systems. Today you can put fresh beans into a coffee vending machine, along with really decent powdered cappuccino milk powders, and after 20 seconds the beans have been ground, the coffee drawn down and the dairy powder whipped up to provide a coffee shop quality cappuccino.

So it isn't surprising that companies are turning to softer employee satisfaction generators like decent office beverages to keep staff happy. Besides, as we all know, the coffee machine is a great place for interaction between staff and for sharing ideas.

Paul Jacobs, managing director of Office Angels, a UK based company, was quoted in The Scotsman as saying "pay packets are, of course, vitally important, but for many it's the little things that can really make the difference between a good working environment and a great one." The article concludes that many workers do long hours of unpaid overtime, so many employers are also enjoying the perk of having dedicated staff. Keeping staff happy can lead to better staff retention and smaller recruitment bills.

So many companies are investing in high quality bean-to-cup coffee machines because they not only provide a homely odour (the good kind!) but they keep staff on site. In a study by Wirthlin International entitled "Speciality Beverage Systems' Impact on the Workplace" (www.wirthlineurope.com), over 15% of staff were found to leave the office daily in search of hot beverages! With a good coffee machine there is no reason to pop down to the local coffee franchise which takes valuable time away from the office - and usually a lot more than imagined given the traffic jams and congested parking lots that epitomise our city cultures.

The Wirthlin study interviewed 76 procurement managers and 383 staff from a wide variety of companies about workplace coffee. It found that 83% of the staff stated that the provision of a wide variety of hot beverages was one of the most visible daily staff benefits and 86% said that companies that valued them were more likely to offer high quality beverages. Interestingly, over 90% of managers making decisions on office coffee services said that employees would be more productive if staff could obtain a beverage in the office and 96% said that the coffee machine offered a necessary break between activities. Valuable? I think so.

The fact that coffee from coffee machines was readily available was also seen as an important attribute, and for decision makers worried about abuse, how many cups of fresh brew coffee can you really drink a day! (before bouncing around the room on a caffeine high!). Of course coffee machines can also provide fresh tea, hot chocolate, espresso and a host of other specialty coffees like moccachino, café latte and the like.

That reminds me, we need one around here for our staff! I guess not. So is it surprising that there has been a rise in demand for these automated fresh brew coffee machines in the corporate world?

History of Arabian Coffee

robusta. It prefers higher elevations and drier climates than its cousin C. Arabian coffee accounts for about 80% of all coffee produced in the world. Arabia lends its name to the highest quality coffee plant in the world, Coffea Arabica. Arabian coffee is the quintessential coffee of the world.

This gives it time to develop the internal elements and oils that give coffee its aromatic flavor. Generally, the higher the plant is grown the slower it matures. The tropics of South America provide ideal conditions for growing Arabian coffee which grows best between 3,000 and 6,500 feet but has been grown as high as 9,000 feet.

Arabian coffee soon came to be known as an Islamic beverage. Soon it became a beverage endorsed by the Islamic clerics as drinking alcohol was prohibited in their religion. Soon it became a beverage endorsed by the Islamic people. Coffee soon made its way to Yemen where it was embraced by the Islamic people. Coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia, just across the Red Sea from Arabia.

However, the Catholic Cardinals shunned it as the ‘Devil's drink' and tried to have it banned. Arabian coffee was exported to Europe where the people embraced it.

He decided that to banish the delightful drink would be a shame to let the impious ones have this delightful drink all to themselves. As legend has it, the Pope was immediately enamored by the distinct, pungent aroma and taste. But then Pope Clement VIII decided that it would be imprudent to ban the beverage without having tasted it, so he summoned a sample.

Arabian coffee is still a part of the Islamic faith and is use in ritualistic ceremonies.

Arabian coffee growers protected their monopoly on the prized plant. They were the exclusive providers of coffee throughout the world for several hundred years.

That is until a coffee plant finally made its way to the Caribbean. This began a new legacy of high-quality coffee in Latin America.

It is said that all the Arabica coffee grown in the world started from this plant as cuttings were transplanted all over the world. Arabian coffee is truly the source of coffee throughout the world.

The word mocha comes from the name Mokha, the shipping port in Yemen where all Arabian coffee was exported. Mocha has become a term used for describing a coffee beverage in which chocolate is added. But originally it had nothing to do with chocolate.

an introduction to the tassimo hot beverage system

The Tassimo Hot Beverage System may just be one of the most versatile beverage makers on the market today. There is a reason that they call it a 'hot beverage system' rather than a one-cup coffee machine. When discussing the Tassimo hot beverage system, one thing should be made clear: Tassimo is not a single-serve coffee maker. Distributed by Braun, the Tassimo uses a proprietary T-disc design to brew just about any type of beverage that uses hot water, and brews it perfectly every time. The Tassimo hot beverage system is designed by Kraft, a multinational food and beverage company, and is manufactured by Saeco, which makes the highest quality coffee and espresso in the world. The T-Disc and What Makes It Unique Pods are essentially the same, no matter what their size - they consist of a pre-measured portion of coffee compressed into a puck and covered with a paper filter. machines. (Easy Serving Espresso) pods, which are standardized in size and volume to fit E.S.E. There's a wide range of espresso systems and coffee maker systems that use E.S.E. Most one cup systems use little filter packets stuffed with pre-measured and firmly packed coffee called 'pods'. The K-cup is designed to be a mini-brewer, similar to Tassimo's T-disc, but there is one major difference. Tassimo's closest competitor, Keurig, uses a proprietary coffee filter and holder all in one called a K-cup.

  • The bar code
The true innovation behind the T-Disc, and the thing that makes every beverage brewed in the Tassimo consistently good - is the bar code technology. The Tassimo system is a smart machine. Each T-Disc is marked with a bar code that tells the machine how much water to use, what temperature to heat the water to and how long to brew the beverage before releasing it. The bar code reader gives the Tassimo system its major advantage over other one cup beverage makers - consistency. The tasters at Kraft work to find the perfect combination of water, heat and time for each new beverage - and once that's found, every single cup of that beverage brewed in the Tassimo will always be perfect.
Versatility Plus The Tassimo makes far more than coffee. Kraft and many other beverage makers have opted to have their beverages packaged in T-discs. You can make coffee, crema coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, hot chocolate and tea using your Tassimo T-disc system. Because the beverage pours directly from the T-disc into the cup, you can make several different kinds of beverages in a row. With a Tassimo, after dinner coffee on holidays is a snap, even if everyone at the dinner table wants a different kind of drink. How Easy Is It? Making drinks in your Tassimo is as simple as one-two-three: One: Fill the water container and put it back in place on the base unit. Press the on/off switch and open the brew mechanism. The machine will turn on and the water starts heating. Two: Put a clean cup on the cup stand. The stand adjusts so that the cup's rim is close to the brew mechanism with a simple twist and lift. Three: Put your chosen T-disc on the T-disc holder in the brew mechanism, clamp the brew mechanism closed and press start once the Auto Light turns on. That's it. Once you've pressed the start/stop button, all that's left to do is wait for your drink to be done. When it's finished, just open the brew mechanism, throw away the used T-disc and enjoy your beverage. Customizing Your Drinks The Tassimo also has a manual mode that allows you to customize the way your beverage is brewed. Once the machine switches from auto to manual mode, there will be a handy front panel light that says "Manual." You can now add more water to the drink, or you can stop the brewing process immediately for a stronger drink. What about selection? Tassimo features a great variety of high quality coffees in T-discs, and they're available by direct delivery or for purchase retail. find the best coffee

The social beverage of the word, coffee, is by far one of the most satisfying addictions one can have. That aroma of a fresh brewed cup of coffee can awaken the senses like nothing else. That first sip of sweet espresso or well made Turkish coffee can entice even the most devout coffee hater. Not any old coffee will drive men to tears over its savory goodness.

Choosing the right coffee blend is an art form. You can compare it to those who choose wines for gourmet dinners. Coffee is no different. Following are several tips to help you on the way to finding great coffee.

    1. Do yourself a favor and avoid buying name brand coffee. All that you are doing is helping them pay for their substantial marketing machine.
    2. Look for local roasters. They take great pride in their coffee beans and the roasting process. You may find a gem.
    3. Roasting is one of the keys to a great coffee. Light roasts typically go way of being acidic in flavor. Dark roasts are more bitter and “full” or “medium” roasts are balanced between the two.
    4. The higher quality coffee lends themselves to distinct flavors and sweetness regardless if they are dark roasts, medium or light roasts. A good bean roasted lightly will still be sweet with a touch of bitterness whereas a good bean dark roasted will be akin to a desert that contains nuts.
    5. People like to think that certain countries produce different types of coffee. The best coffees produced tend to be suited to darker or lighter roasted coffees. Light to dark the countries are: Central America, South America and Caribbean, Africa and then finishing up with Indonesia and India.
    6. Use coffee beans roasted for less than ten days prior. Older beans will simply taste like boring, unsweetened cocoa.
    7. Grind your coffee beans minutes before actually brewing. This will give you the height of flavor and substance in your morning cup and make those gourmet coffee recipes shine above and beyond.

    Arabica vs. Robusta

When you buy coffee at a Starbucks or online you will generally be buying Arabica coffee beans. Purchasing from a deli (typically an Italian-run one) will be a blend known as Robusta. Robusta is a bitter coffee with twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans.

Arabica is the choice of gourmet coffee drinkers all over the world. It is a subtle flavor that is sweet and nutty, but pleasant. Robusta is simply just too bitter and is really your grandfather’s blend and should be avoided for social coffee drinking.

All of this information is for naught if you do not get yourself a quality coffee maker in order to brew your favorite beverage. One-cup coffee makers are great because they keep your coffee fresh by the cup with no sitting around to get stale and lifeless. Espresso makers with milk steamers are great if you wish to experiment with your coffee. You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on a machine either. Go with the best that fits your budget.

points to look for when buying a coffee maker

To make good coffee every day you need to keep some key factors in mind and cost isn't the only one. The only way you can make sure that first and second cup of java is perfect is by purchasing a good quality coffee maker in the first place. Chances are your answer is a nice, hot cup of Joe. What is the first thing you think of when you first wake up in the morning? Your coffee maker is the most important thing to you in the morning? There are some basic features to look for when choosing a coffee maker and some luxury features that may give you a better tasting cup of coffee The majority of coffee makers are generally quite good and you will notice no difference in the taste of your coffee from one brand to another. If you are going to spend money on your favorite coffee, you will want to make sure the coffee maker you choose is of good quality and has the features you want. Choosing a good coffee maker is not a decision to be taken for granted. Timers allow you to interrupt the brewing process, if you can’t wait for that first cup in the morning. Timers allow you to interrupt the brewing process, if you can’t wait for that first cup in the morning. Timers allow you to program the machine to start brewing before you wake up in the morning. Many models offer pause and pour features that allow you to interrupt the brewing process, if you can’t wait for that first cup in the morning. The Bunn coffee makers are very reliable machines that brew a cup in about three minutes. The grounds are placed in the filter and the dripping water extracts the flavor. Drip machines work by heating the water and then dripping it through the grounds. If you like to try a wide variety of coffee types, you may want a standard machine. Most flavored grounds are made for traditional pots. A standard machine is preferred by people who like the taste of weaker coffee. Your basic decision here is if you want traditional coffee or a specialty drink. This depends on what kind of drinks you want to prepare. The first step in choosing the right one is deciding what type you want. Here are some important buying tips which you must consider before buying it: You must also check coffee makers against digital features. A good coffee maker would come with a digital display panel attached with a timer and auto off mechanism. This feature is very beneficial for home use as auto off would let you pay attention to other things in home, while you are making coffee. This is one of the most useful features that your coffee maker can have if you need a pot of coffee. Instead of having to wait for the pot to finish brewing or trying to swap out your cup and the pot (and spilling coffee everywhere), the act of removing the pot closes a valve on the maker and lets you pour yourself a cup before resuming your brew. An efficient water filtering equipment happens to be an integral part of superior quality coffee makers. Its presence ensures that your coffee won't get a bad flavor due to excess iron and other unwanted content of water. You may also look for a coffee maker that offers you a bean grinder that is integrated with the machine. These grinders grind only few beans to give needed amount of coffee. This feature results in a flavor that carries tinge of freshness with itself. Take a look at the model of coffee maker that you're considering buying. See how well it's constructed, how easy it is to use, and whether the coffee pot is reinforced or is simply glass. Reinforced coffee pots act like a thermos, keeping your coffee hot and fresh for much longer. So, buy a coffee maker with latest features to enjoy the coffee with finest flavors in no time.
